General Information. 28,000 inhabitants. 502 kilometres to the south of Madrid. Almuñecar is situated on the Tropical Coast (Costa Tropical), in the province of Granada and the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. Almuñecar is a tourist resort to which visitors are drawn by the charming contrast between beaches and mountains. Archaeological findings reveal that the town's origins date back to 1500 BC. It was formerly a Phoenecian settlement called Sexi, which explains why its inhabitants are now known as "sexitanos". Almuñecar is a very attractive place to study Spanish with some language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. Salobreña (12 kilometres), a traditional and picturesque Andalusian coastal village huddled between beaches and mountains; Nerja (25 kilometres), a coastal town; Granada (75 kilometres); the Sierra de la Alpujarra (85 kilometres).

Main Sights. El Columbario de la Torre del Monje, a Roman necropolis, where urns containing the ashes of the dead were placed. Another monument to be highlighted is the very well conserved Roman Aqueduct, originally made up of five sections, each containing several arches.

Culture. The Castle of Saint Michael (Castillo de San Miguel) and its Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico). El Jardín Museo del Bonsái, 1,800 square metres of gardens with 127 different types of bonsai tree. El parque ornitológico "Loro sexi", a bird reserve. El parque botánico El Majuelo, a botanical park. El Cacuarium-Aquarium, Almuñecar's aquarium, and ‘the municipal pottery centre' (centro de alfarería municipal).

Beaches. The urban area also has 19 kilometres of coastline, which is divided into 26 beaches. Here you will find popular tourist beaches as well as more remote and private coves. These are among the town's most attractive features. The beaches are a major attraction for the many students who decide to study Spanish in Almuñecar.

Shopping. In Almuñecar´s historic centre you will find El Centro Comercial Abierto, which is a pedestrianized shopping area that winds its way through the old quarter and the surrounding areas. Those who love shopping in street markets should spend their Fridays in the Paseo de Blas Infante, while handicraft goods can be found in the Plaza de Abderramán.

Gastronomy. In Almuñecar those who wish to sample the most typical local tapas should head for La Bodeguita, in Calle Manila; El Lute in Avenida Europa; Los Pajaritos in Cuesta del Castillo de San Miguel, as well as other establishments that can be found in Plaza Kelibia. The most popular food products in Almuñecar are fish, vegetables and tropical fruit. These form the basis of many typical dishes such as ‘salad with giant white prawns and mango' and ‘chicken breast stuffed with mango, mousse and mango sorbet'.

Sports. Some of the many sports on offer include diving, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking, you can learn any of these sports here. There is also a marina and the Complejo Ecológico Peña Escrita, an ecological complex where you can try anything from hiking to paragliding. Almuñecar also boasts a Municipal Horse Riding Centre, (Centro Ecuestre Municipal), a Municipal Sports Stadium (Estadio Municipal de Almuñecar), the Las Tejas football ground, a municipal sports centre (Pabellón Municipal) and an indoor municipal swimming pool.

Fiestas. The first fiesta in high season which draws many tourists is La Virgen del Carmen (16th July), the patron saint of fishermen. In Almuñecar another important fiesta is La Virgen de la Antigua (beginning of August), where locals commemorate the victory of Lope de Valenzuela over the Moor, Aben Aboo, in 1569 by organizing a nocturnal procession by sea, with a multitude of flower-strewn boats accompanying the Virgin to the ‘Sea Port' (Puerta del Mar) amid firework celebrations.

Transport. The Tren Turístico Trópico Express is a tourist train which runs throughout the summer months. The main stop is at San Cristóbal beach. There is also a bike hire service providing bicycles for tourists. It is easy to get from Almuñecar to other Spanish cities.

Nightlife. Students who decide to study Spanish in Almuñecar will discover a very active nightlife. In Almuñecar there are two areas for partying: Los Bajos, where you will find bars and pubs such as El Pipote, La Jaima, Bar Dallas... and the Plaza Kelibia, where there are typical tapas bars like El Pesebre, El Cortijillo and La Trastienda, as well as bars like Jauja or La Calle. Those who prefer a disco scene can opt for Aquatropic or Altillo 15.
